How Much Does a Bespoke Diamond Engagement Ring Cost in the UK?

Your guide to commissioning a bespoke handmade engagement ring

N J Geddes Fine Jewellery

At N J Geddes Fine Jewellery, every engagement ring we create is designed to capture a story — personal, emotional, and utterly one-of-a-kind. But when it comes to commissioning a bespoke diamond engagement ring, many clients wonder:

“What exactly am I paying for?”

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the key factors that shape the price of a handmade engagement ring, from the craftsmanship involved to diamond quality, design complexity and more.

Whether you’re starting your search or ready to begin the journey, we hope this gives you both confidence and clarity.

1. Craftsmanship: Handmade in England

The heart of any bespoke piece is the skill of the maker. Unlike mass-produced rings, our standard of bespoke rings we create are handmade in England by master artisans using traditional techniques with passion and craftsmanship.

From mounting and soldering to filing, setting stones and polishing, each ring can take 20 to 40 hours of skilled bench time depending on complexity.

Many of our rings contain details that reflect antique jewellery, details such as coronets, basket back with designs that are abstract.

These skills were utilised by the Master Jewellers of the Belle Epoque era and into the 1920s.

This investment in time, precision and quality is reflected in the price and ensures your ring is truly made to last a lifetime.

2. The Diamond: Grading, Quality & Certification

Natural diamonds vary dramatically in price depending on their quality, which is often graded by the 4 Cs — cut, colour, clarity and carat weight.

For example, as of May 2025:

  • A 1.20ct round brilliant diamond graded D/VVS1 may cost over £15,000.
  • A similar 1.2ct diamond graded F/VS2 may cost in the region of £10,000- £12,000.

Diamond Shape and cut – bespoke engagement rings

It is also crucial to understand ‘make’ when it comes to natural diamonds and their overall proportions. A perfect triple excellent cut polish and symmetry of a natural round diamond costs more compared to ones with Good grade.

Carat weight is just that, a measure of weight and so clients can be confused as to why a 2ct diamond costs less from one provider to the other when all other factors on a grading report are equal.

This is because diamond A) will have the far better mm spread proportions and not have the size in the diamonds depth compared to diamond B.

Diamond Carat weight and how it impacts price

Diamond carat weight jump point pricing. It is worth noting that natural diamonds increase at higher rate in price at those classic and sought after weights.

For example a 2.00ct round diamond jumps in value over one that is 1.99ct, or even for a 2.5ct over a 2.49ct.

Round diamonds cost more than any other shape with all other factors being equal.

We only source certified stones from respected UK-based suppliers, with full traceability and GIA certification. We’ll also help you choose a stone that offers the best beauty and value.

We are also specialists in Natural fancy colour diamonds. These are rare Earth creations that sought after and have a much higher value.

3. Ring complexity of Design

A simple solitaire design takes less time, and therefore costs less, than an ornate ring with intricate detailing. Some of the elements that increase cost include:

  • Pavé or halo settings
  • Diamond-set shoulders
  • Vintage-style or Art Deco influences
  • Hand-engraving or symbolic elements
  • Unique stone shapes or double bands
  • Back holes for underneath the diamonds – allowing for light.
  • Intricate mounting work within the gold or platinum

Engagement ring complexity and setting style = more hours at the bench.

We’ll always tailor your design to match both your vision and your budget. At N J Geddes we specialise in high jewellery design, tailoring exquisite diamonds, jewels and the individual’s personality to create unique engagement rings to last a lifetime and beyond.

Our designs can also involve the delicate art of gouache to capture the finest details and present these to clients.

4. Metal Choice: Platinum vs Gold

The metal you choose will also influence the overall cost. The most popular options include:

  • Platinum: Durable, naturally white, and ideal for daily wear. Can more expensive and labour-intensive to work with*.
  • 18ct Gold: Available in yellow, white or rose. Luxurious and slightly softer than platinum.

*A note on Gold. Gold is a globally traded commodity and is highly impacted by Geo Political and economic factors. Gold hit record high prices per ounce in Spring 2025.

We’ll guide you through the pros and cons of each option, based on design, skin tone and durability.

5. Customisation & Special Touches

Many clients ask us to incorporate something meaningful, and we love this part of the process.

Popular personal touches for a bespoke engagement ring include:

  • Hidden gemstones (like birthstones or anniversary stones)
  • Crafting unique shapes into the ring for emotional meaning
  • Engraved messages or initials
  • Reusing family diamonds or heirloom gold
  • Designing complementary wedding bands

6. The Bespoke ring Design Process

Every ring begins with a private consultation, either in person at our Boston Spa, Yorkshire boutique, or at the client’s own homes. We also have consultations at our lifestyle partners such as 5* Hotel Grantley Hall in Yorkshire or various 5* hotels in London. From there, we move through a careful design process:

  1. Initial ideas and inspiration
  2. Hand-drawn sketches or CAD renders
  3. Diamond or jewel sourcing and shortlisting
  4. Feedback and revisions
  5. Final approval before creation begins

We keep you involved and informed throughout — and only move forward once you’re thrilled with the design.

7. Our Craftsmanship: Handmade as Standard

As discussed above At N J Geddes Fine Jewellery, we take great pride in creating handmade jewellery using traditional techniques here in England. This is not just a method — it’s a philosophy. We believe the most meaningful pieces are made by human hands, shaped with care, precision, and artistry.

🛠️ Handmade Jewellery in England – Our Standard

For the vast majority of our bespoke engagement rings, we work entirely by hand from raw precious metals. Your ring is meticulously formed, soldered, filed, and finished by a master goldsmith , a process that typically takes 20–40 hours at the bench.

  • Allows for organic detail and total design flexibility
  • Ideal for heirloom-quality pieces
  • Represents the highest level of craftsmanship
  • A true one-of-a-kind piece, built to last a lifetime

This method reflects our commitment to slow, considered luxury — and it’s how we achieve the timeless character our clients love.

Why Many Jewellers in the UK Use CAD design and cast

In the wider UK jewellery industry, the majority of engagement rings even those labelled “bespoke” are created using computer-aided design (CAD) followed by casting. This approach has become popular because it allows jewellers to:

  • Create digital designs quickly
  • Replicate those designs repeatedly with minimal variation
  • Streamline production and reduce workshop labour

By casting multiple versions of a CAD model, jewellers can offer “custom” rings at lower prices , often changing only the stone or minor elements.

However, while this method is efficient and can produce attractive results, it does not require the same level of traditional skill or craftsmanship as making a ring entirely by hand.

🔍 CAD – What’s the Difference?

A CAD-based ring is digitally produced, often cast in batches, and then finished by a jeweller. The design is shaped on-screen, not at the bench. It lacks the unique nuances and subtle integrity that only a master goldsmith can impart.

A handmade engagement ring made in the UK, by contrast, is built from raw metal using decades honed techniques, cut, formed, and soldered entirely at the bench. Every detail is intentional. Every curve is guided by the eye and hand.

Why This Matters for You

Many jewellers choose the CAD route because it’s:

  • Cheaper to produce
  • Easier to scale
  • Quicker to deliver

But for clients who want a truly one of a kind piece — one with personality, heritage, and enduring value, we believe handmade is worth every ounce of time and care.

At N J Geddes Fine Jewellery, we do occasional use CAD when there is a clear technical reason to do so and it benefits the client’s design and manufacture. Yet our standard is handmade.

8. What Does a Bespoke Diamond Engagement Ring Actually Cost?

At N J Geddes Fine Jewellery, bespoke engagement rings typically start at £5,000+, with many clients commissioning rings between £5,000 and £20,000.

Designs with rare and or larger diamonds, intricate detailing or heirloom remodelling can be between £15,000 – £50,000+. There’s no upper limit — but there’s also no pressure.

We’re always happy to work within your budget, and we’ll give you a clear, tailored quote before any work begins.

We ask for a 50% deposit to secure the commission, with the balance due on completion.

How long does a bespoke diamond engagement ring take to make?

We typically say between 4-6 weeks for a hand made beautiful ring to last a life time.

A note on other jewels as a bespoke engagement engagement ring.

While this guide focuses on diamonds as the most requested centre stone for engagement rings in the UK, we at N J Geddes fine jewellery also specialise with fine Sri Lankan sapphires, Burmese rubies, and other rare gems.

If you’re drawn to something different, we’re happy to advise on suitability and pricing for bespoke designs.

9 Why Choose Bespoke for your engagement ring?

Bespoke isn’t about extravagance,  it’s about meaning. When you commission a bespoke ring, you’re creating:

  • A piece no one else in the world owns.
  • A ring that reflects your partner’s style , passion and your shared story
  • An heirloom made with integrity, intention and expert craftsmanship

In short, you’re not just buying a ring. You’re creating a symbol of your future made to last for generations.

Looking for a Romantic Proposal Venue?

The Perfect Place to Propose in the UK

Finding the ideal proposal venue is a big part of your proposal planning. You want it to be romantic, memorable, magical and private enough to have that quiet moment when you propose.

Planning Your Proposal

It can be daunting choosing where and how to propose; you want it to be that perfect moment that your partner will be proud to tell their friends and family about. But you also want to enjoy the occasion and remove any potential stresses that could arise.

Here are our tips and some inspiration for making the perfect proposal:

Plan it around your partner and what they like and enjoy

If they love to be outside in nature then planning an outdoor proposal with a luxury picnic hamper could be a good fit. Or if they like the finer things in life then planning a proposal in an opulent and unusual location could work well.

What about the ring?

Do you know what they will like? Will you buy it beforehand or choose it together? Take a look at our Gentleman’s Guide to Choosing an Engagement Ring for ideas.

For a really unique approach, try the Grantley Hall and N.J. Geddes Jewellery Experience. This involves designing your dream engagement ring together as part of your special stay at Grantley. You could even present a beautiful uncut diamond in a box signifying the start of your journey together creating a handcrafted bespoke engagement ring.

The little details make the difference

It’s often the small touches that elevate an occasion and make it run smoothly. Consider, for example, where you will hide the ring, what time of day will you propose, what time of year/season, what will you tell them about your trip and what’s your cover story to keep it a surprise.

If your partner likes to capture moments on social media, then are you choosing an Instagrammable proposal location? And don’t forget to take a photo or video afterwards.

Make the most of the occasion

Following all the build up to the proposal, planning something relaxing together afterwards to celebrate is a great idea. If your proposal is at Grantley Hall then you could treat yourselves to a champagne afternoon tea, spa treatments, a cocktail in the bar or a fine dining experience.

The Gentleman’s Guide to Choosing an Engagement Ring

The proposal. A moment of pure romance, demonstrating your love for ‘the one’ and the beginning of the rest of your lives together. Your beautiful fiancée-to-be has dreamt of this proposal with excitement and anticipation. You, on the other hand, might be feeling nervous and unsure – will she accept the proposal and, crucially, will she like the ring …

I know these feelings from experience, and, don’t worry gents, I’m going to share with you some advice that will help you choose the perfect engagement ring.

Choosing an engagement ring – where to start?

Most of the men who come to me for engagement rings start the process feeling overwhelmed and, to be honest, clueless about what type of ring to select for their loved one. It’s completely natural to feel this way and we’re here to support you and to make the process of selecting an engagement ring enjoyable and memorable.

Surprise or choose together

The first decision you need to make is whether you are going to purchase a ring for the proposal or whether you will choose a ring together afterwards.

Here, you’ll have to rely on instinct and how well you know your partner. Is she the type of person who is quite particular about what she wants? Are you unsure what her style is? If yes, then you might want to involve her in the decision-making process. Or perhaps she goes with the flow and has always loved your choices of presents and jewellery in the past? In this case you might feel more confident in selecting the ring yourself.

Selecting a bespoke engagement ring together

If you opt for picking a ring together, you’ll need to consider having a ‘stand-in’ ring for your proposal. Then you still have a ring to present but you can explain how you would like to experience the special event of choosing a ring together. You can really make an occasion of it, especially if you decide to create a bespoke ring with us. We can organise champagne, canapés and petit fours to accompany our engagement ring consultations.

Diamond and fountain pen
Inspiration for your bespoke engagement ring

Together we will discuss your fiancée’s style, diamond, jewel and metal preferences in a private and elegant location. We’ll view beautiful hand-painted gouache drawings of engagement rings for inspiration.

Once we have agreed your requirements, we’ll then have our award-winning designer make sketches of the ring for you to review at a second consultation. Depending on the scope of the ring, we may have an additional stage where we approve hand-painted designs. Or our third meeting may be the fitting and presentation of the ring, again with a glass of champagne to celebrate. Making choosing an engagement ring together a very intimate bonding experience that you’re sure to remember forever.

The surprise

If you’ve decided to select an engagement ring yourself and go for the full surprise proposal, then we are still here to support you. We have a range of off-the-shelf diamond engagement rings available in our boutique, but our most popular request is for a bespoke engagement ring.

Diamond ring
Hand-painted design for a diamond engagement ring with fancy yellow diamonds

We’ll guide you through the creation of a unique engagement ring, but you’ll need to come to our consultation prepped and having done some detective work. So, in advance you’ll need to have a look at her current jewellery collection:

  • What patterns can you notice?
  • Which metals does she like? Platinum, rose gold, white gold, yellow gold
  • What is her style? Classic, vintage, lavish, quirky, demure
  • Which jewels does she prefer? Diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds – engagement rings don’t have to be diamonds – go with whatever suits her personality and individual style.

Don’t be afraid to ask her friends and family a few discreet questions about what she might like – assuming you can either do this without arousing suspicion or that they can be trusted to keep the secret. Perhaps she’s always dreamt of a particular ring or admires a celebrity’s engagement ring – e.g. Kate Middleton’s sapphire engagement ring is popular at the moment.

It doesn’t have to be a diamond ring – Sapphires make a real statement

“Having thoroughly researched the type of engagement ring I wanted and seeing many examples on the high street, I needed a more bespoke solution combining a number of key features for the diamond, ring setting and ring band. Neil provided the personal service that I found extremely valuable in creating a bespoke ring to my choosing including sourcing me the perfect diamond. My now Wife still gazes at her ring in admiration and I can’t give a better testimony than that. I highly recommend Neil and the tailored advice and service he provides.”

Diamond engagement rings – the detail

Once we’ve covered the groundwork and have built up a picture of your partner’s preferences, we get into the detail to finish off the ring. If you are choosing a diamond engagement ring here are a few facts that might be useful – we’ll talk you through all these though, so don’t feel bogged down by the options.

Diamonds – the 4Cs

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) created the 4Cs as the industry standard for grading diamonds: Cut, Clarity, Colour and Carat weight.

  • Cut – proportions and shape determine the brilliance and fire within a diamond. A poor cut diamond will not sparkle as much as an excellent cut and polish.
  • Clarity – all diamonds have natural traces of growth, these are known as internal characteristics. When discussing clarity, we talk about the size, number and location of these characteristics when examined under 10 x magnification. The highest grade is Flawless, the lowest grade is Included (I3).
  • Colour – in white diamonds is actually graded as the absence of colour, i.e. the whitest it can be. The vast majority of white diamonds actually have yellowish tints. The scale starts at the highest D – colourless and goes down to Z – light yellow/brown.
  • Carat weight – the weight of a diamond is measured in metric carats. One carat is equal to 0.2g. The larger the weight, the more expensive.

Large diamond, white background
Cut, clarity, colour, carat – perfection

The better the combination of the 4Cs means the greater the quality of the diamond. Does size matter? It is often better to select a diamond with a higher grade cut, clarity and colour than simply choosing the biggest. However, you know what she likes, and if big and sparkly is her thing, then go for it!

If you would like an in-depth look at diamond quality and the 4Cs then take a look at the GIA’s website.

Diamond shape

Diamonds are available in all shapes and sizes, including:

  • Round cut – classic and timeless
  • Princess cut – square cut, contemporary
  • Marquise cut – a football-shaped, brilliant cut
  • Pear cut – elegant, helps to elongate the finger
  • Emerald cut – rectangular cut
  • Oval cut – an elongated cut that can give the illusion of a larger diamond
  • Heart cut – a symbol of love
  • Cushion cut – a rounded square or rectangle cut.

Two solitaire diamond rings
On the left, a traditional 0.80ct round brilliant diamond, set between 2 trapeze cut diamond shoulders. On the right, a 0.90ct princess cut diamond, in a twist setting ‘north to south’.

Diamond settings

More choices abound with settings for diamond engagement rings, which incorporate:

  • Prong setting – acting like a claw to grasp the diamond, often with a solitaire diamond
  • Channel setting – a row of diamonds side by side
  • Halo setting – a centre diamond with a halo of smaller diamonds around it
  • Bezel setting – a modern setting with metal around the shape of the diamond
  • Invisible setting – an all diamond surface with the setting hidden
  • Pavé setting – closely setting many smaller diamonds together in a band
  • Trilogy setting – with three diamonds, symbolising your past, present and future love.

Heirloom

One option that we haven’t mentioned is that of converting a family heirloom into an engagement ring. This is a deeply personal and sentimental approach that might suit you and your partner – if it does, then have a look at how we can remodel jewellery and turn something old into something new.

Engagement ring consultation

There are many options to consider in choosing an engagement ring for your partner, but creating a custom ring means that we’ll guide you through each step, making the process surprisingly simple and enjoyable.

What you’ll end up with is a uniquely exquisite engagement ring that expresses both your love and your partner’s personality like no other.
